Coaching and Motherhood

I always tell my children that if they work hard, they can be whatever they want to be when they grow up. But, the truth is, I know there’s a lot more to it. I always knew I wanted to be a mother and have been blessed to have that dream come true. But, I also want to make a difference, help others, and ideally make some money in the process.

I tip my hat to all the parents who raise their families while working outside the home. But, for those of us who don’t have that option, opportunities to work from home are scarce. At times I have felt quite desperate to have a connection to the world outside my home. I have been discouraged by the fact that despite my education and drive, my options didn’t align with the goals I have for myself. As a stay at home mom, I not only need to work from home, I need a career path that will allow me the flexibility to keep my children and their needs a top priority while fueling my passion and building financial security at the same time. Was this too much to ask for? For years this felt like a Rubik’s cube that I feared would never match up. With persistence and hope, I have now found exactly what I have been looking for. I found life coaching.

Since becoming an FIA Certified Professional Coach and Certified Master Trainer, I have found a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. Having a thriving business that I can call my own has renewed my self-worth in ways that reach far beyond the needs of my family. When so much of my day is consumed with the needs of my children, my coaching practice is about me. It has afforded me the opportunity to focus on my own goals and those of my clients. For so long my gratitude for the chance to be home with my children did not extinguish the overwhelming feeling of being stuck at home. Finding coaching at long last has taught me that I can love my children with my whole heart and still have plenty left to give. I’m now connected with others in a way I haven’t been in years and have the privilege of helping my clients match up their lives with their ambitions just as I have.

In this process I have learned that as important as it is to tell my children that they can achieve anything with hard work, seeing their mom work within the constraints of being home truly brings that message to life. They see the beautiful balance of my parenting and my work as a coach. They see first-hand that being home with them is a time I cherish and my ambition was not stifled by their birth. They know that being their mother has fueled me to work harder, dream bigger and seek out incredible opportunities that are greater than I could have ever imagined for myself.

What I realized is that if you are a parent, you are already a coach. You are equipped with the tools to help guide others, create accountability and celebrate success. As a parent, those traits are second nature. To the mom who feels like she forgot how to communicate with adults, I’m talking to you. You already know how to do this! You live this every day. Yes, the application is a bit different but that’s what the right training is all about. You have the heart; you innately possess the skills, and if I can do it, you can too.
